The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), first enforced their healthcare insurance program in 1965. Today, the program covers various eligible groups, including families with low incomes and people with disabilities.
Further, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was established in 1997 to cover children whose families do not meet the income requirements for Medicaid. CHIP covers more than nine million children in the United States.
